Treat & Swim

Combining a wastewater treatment plant and a leisure pool is possible!

Treat & Swim is the combination of a local wastewater treatment plant and an open-air swimming pool. The solution improves both the quality of polluted urban water and the quality of life in the city.

A seven-pool Olympic-size pool to start

In 2022, the city of Brussels asked the architectural firm KIS studio and SWECO engineers to evaluate the possibility of bathing in the canal that crosses the city and whose waters are deemed unfit for swimming. The consortium will propose. The two entities after studying the feasibility of the project started working and created the Treat & Swim system.

The implementation of the Treat & Swim system is done in several steps: first, the usable waterway must be identified so that it can be combined with its existing function, then the equipment must be sized according to the pre-existing activities and green spaces, next comes the choice of water treatment and finally, the management of the installation and the creation of beach areas, reception areas, changing rooms… For the Brussels project named “Becobad”, as its name indicates, the choice was made for the “Beco” section of the canal for its central position. The pool will be open for bathing in 2027/2028 and will be able to accommodate 2400 bathers per day. It will also contribute to the treatment of part of the canal’s water. KIS studio and SWECO intend to convince other European cities to rely on their Treat & Swim system and are planning feasibility studies in several of them.
