OPAT (Geomatys)

Satellite images and a digital tool to track plastic

The OPAT (Ocean Plastic Alert and Tracking system) product aims to improve the efficiency of plastic waste collection at sea by detecting debris from space and predicting its drift over the next few hours.

Two versions adaptable to different situations

OPAT, is a digital tool that manages to combine many complex data sources (satellite images, meteorological and oceanographic models) to provide operators with a turnkey tool for the organization and optimization of plastics collection. The software is available in two versions: a version for post-crisis weather management, where waste arrivals are massive and can even hinder the safety of navigation. A second version, anchored in daily life, is dedicated to communities that have waste collection systems at sea during the tourist season.

The OPAT solution was born from the know-how of Geomatys, a small and medium-sized company specializing in the massive exploitation of spatial data, and from its desire to apply this know-how to useful solutions for major environmental problems. To develop OPAT, the Geomatys team relies on expert collaborators in the development of geographic information systems, in the exploitation of satellite and oceanographic data and on researchers from the academic world.
